Woolguard Natural is a Schedule 3 barrier interliner, 137cm wide, for use under natural-fibre covers that haven't been FR treated. It's a wool and cellulose felt that is inherently flame retardant rather than chemically treated. It fits between the fillings and the top cover and passes BS5852 Ignition Source 5 (Crib 5), including after a water soak to BS5651.
When you need a Schedule 3 interliner
Under the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, a cover that doesn't pass the match test on its own can still be used on domestic upholstered furniture if a Schedule 3 interliner goes underneath it. This applies to covers containing at least 75% natural fibre, such as cotton, linen, wool or silk. With a cover like that, you can use this interliner instead of back-coating or FR-treating the fabric.
Why upholsterers choose Woolguard over FR calico
- Stretch: it's much more forgiving than FR calico and moulds easily around curves, arms and scrolls.
- Soft felt body: at roughly 3mm thick before compression, it acts like a thin skin wadding, softening and rounding off edges under the top cover.
- Quicker to fit: it can be laid over fillings without needing to be tacked or stapled everywhere.
- Traditional work: over hair or fibre stuffings, it stops the filling working its way through to the top cover.
- Outside backs and arms: laid over the hessian before the top fabric, it gives a fuller, softer finish.
