Webbing Types Explained
Webbing forms the base that everything else sits on, and the type you choose affects how the seat feels:
- Jute webbing (black & white, or English): the traditional choice, woven from natural jute fibre. Comes in different lb strengths (e.g. 11lb, 14lb) — heavier lb for load-bearing seats, lighter for backs and arms.
- Rubber (Pirelli) webbing: gives a softer, more cushioned support than jute, commonly used on mid-century and modern frames, often woven in a basket-weave pattern.
- Elasticated webbing: stretch webbing used where flexibility is wanted, such as backs and arms, or in combination with jute for extra give.
Jute gives firm, traditional support; rubber and elasticated give more bounce and are quicker to fit.
