Spring Guide: Coil, Zig-Zag & Pocket
Three main spring systems are used in upholstery, each suited to a different style of seat:
- Double-cone coil springs: the traditional choice for deep, sprung seats — tied in a grid with twine over webbing for a firm, bouncy traditional feel. Needs more depth in the frame.
- Serpentine (zig-zag) springs: flat, S-shaped springs that run front-to-back or side-to-side, clipped directly to the frame. Used on slimmer modern frames where there isn't room for coil springs.
- Pocket spring units: individually pocketed springs, typically supplied as a pre-made unit, used for a more cushioned, mattress-like seat feel.
Choose coil springs for traditional deep-buttoned or Chesterfield-style pieces, zig-zag for contemporary low-profile frames, and pocket units where a softer, more even seat feel is wanted.
