Covering Your Own Buttons

← Back to all guides

Covering buttons in your own fabric is a simple process once you've got the right size mould for your button press:

  1. Cut a circle of fabric roughly 2–2.5x the diameter of the finished button, to allow enough fabric to wrap around and grip the back.
  2. Place the fabric face-down in the press mould, then the front button shell on top.
  3. Press down firmly (or strike with the press tool) to fold the fabric edges over and crimp them into the shell.
  4. Fit the back/eye piece and press again to lock the fabric in place.

Mould sizes are measured in lines (e.g. #24, #36, #45) — check your press and button blanks use the same line size before ordering.
